EXCLUSIVE: Remender's Scumbag Debuts Variant by Bengal, Star Wars Homage Variant by Opeña
CBR can exclusively reveal Jerome Opeña and Bengal's upcoming variant covers for Rick Remender's The Scumbag, which includes a Star Wars homage.
Artists Jerome Opeña and Bengal are providing covers for Rick Remender's new Image Comics series, The Scumbag. CBR can exclusively reveal Opeña and Bengal's covers forThe Scumbag, which includes a 1:50 incentive cover by Opeña that homagesStar Wars.
"When Rick told me about The Scumbag, I was immediately hooked!" Bengal said. "And when he told me who the other artists working on it were, I was immediately humbled! So I tried my best to come up with something that would serve the project, and I had a lot of fun in the process! Can't wait for readers to see what it's all about now!"
"Whenever you let Jerome Opeña off the leash to just do whatever he wants you're going to get something spectacular back," Remender added. "Some artists prefer to have direction, and even thrive with it, but I find it with Jerome some of his most exciting work comes when you just leave him alone to do what he does. I didn't expect this cover, I didn't expect the Star Wars homage, and had he told me about it prior to doing it I may have pooh-poohed it, the boy I sure do love the hell out of It. Moreno Dinisio colors are top level great, Leaning into the homage while also rendered in his normal exciting style. Another long time collaborator of mine Bengal did this cover for an upcoming story he'll be drawing that sees Agent Scumbag go on a space adventure. Ernie Ray Clementine's space suit here was designed by my Deadly Class co-creator Wes Craig. Having all these world class artists come in to do different pieces of the story and design various elements has turned into one of the most fun experiences of my career. It's a treat to not only see what each artist cooks up, but to see other artists then interpreting those designs."
The description of The Scumbag reads: "The Scumbag is the story of Ernie Ray Clementine, a profane, illiterate, drug addicted, biker, with a fifth-grade education and the only thing standing between us and total Armageddon because this dummy accidentally received a power-imbuing serum making him the world's most powerful super spy." The series will feature a rotating art team for each issue, with Lewis LaRosa taking the helm of the first installment.
